Biography
Adrián Sandí is currently working on his Doctorate in Musical Arts at the Eastman School of Music, under the guidance of professor Kenneth Grant. He is currently the conductor of the Eastman Clarinet Choir and an active solo recitalist. Adrián has given numerous chamber music and solo performances throughout his musical career in different cities in Costa Rica, Panama, USA, Canada and China.
As an orchestral clarinetist, Adrián has performed with such ensembles as the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica, the Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific, the Orchestra for the Opera Academy of the Pacific and the Oistrach Symphony Orchestra; performing in venues such as the Kennedy Center, Alice Tully Hall, Teatro Nacional de Panama, Teatro Melico Salazar and Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica.
Adrián has won numerous awards, such as First Place and Honorable Mention on the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) State and Regional Chamber Music Competitions respectively, a Semifinalist at the International Clarinet Association Young Artist Competition, First Place winner of the MTNA Young Artist Competition at the State Level and also a winner of the Virginia Commonwealth University Concerto Competition.
Throughout his career, Adrián has participated in numerous masterclasses with professors like Philippe Cupper, David Shifrin, Dr. Richard Shanley, the Borromeo String Quartet, Richard Stoltzman and David Krakauer. He has also performed as a soloist with the clarinet choir of the Festival of Winds and Percussion at VCU, the VCU Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the VCU Symphony Orchestra.
Born and raised in San José, Costa Rica, Adrián began his clarinet studies in 1997 at the National Institute of Music of Costa Rica. He obtained his BM magna cum laude from Virginia Commonwealth University and his MM with distinction from DePaul University. His main professors have included Larry Combs, Julie DeRoche, Dr. Charles West, and Jose Manuel Ugalde.
